Mountain: the video game?

20171026182030_1When some video games make people upset and comment that these games are not video games, this is when i pay attention, i’m not interested in the same old video games but with better this and that.

Mountain is a “video game” which make people argue if it is a video game or not, you see, the interaction in the game is limited, the game could start and finish without any input from you, and that is fine, but the game offer some ways to interact with it, you need to explore them yourself.

For $1 you get a game, or a toy, or is it art? it’s something different than the usual, and for $1 i don’t see what’s the problem with trying it, Mountain start with a white canvas and a word, it asks you draw a symbol for that word, the it starts, it generate a mountain swimming in in the space, the mountain speaks from time to time, with a musical note it type a text message, the mountain is usually happy for the morning or the night, for the rain or the snow, for the vast universe, some times the mountain gets melancholy.

you can play music notes, basic ones, but zoom out and you start hearing long notes, sounds like ambient music, i spent about 10 minutes pressing random keys slowly, giving each note a space to fade out before i press another key, it was a beautiful experience.

I love any game trying to be different, even if i didn’t like it, even if i didn’t understand it, Mountain is a game i loved, it’s a game you can leave it open on the side of the screen or open it in another monitor if you have it, let the mountain talk to you.

The 39 Steps – video game

I bought this game years ago in Steam store, i didn’t know what to expect, and what i found was good to keep my playing to the end of the game.

This game is not really a game, it’s an Interactive Fiction, a digital adaptation to a well known novel, a novel and a writer i never heard of, but the novel is the base for many movies, and you can download for free, or listen to it, the novel is in the public domain, so don’t worry, nothing illegal about downloading it.

As for the game, it is a simple one, there is limited interaction, mostly clicking, there is a good voice acting, very limited exploring where you click on items to see or read them, the story is linear, you follow steps of Richard Hannay, a Scottish gentleman who lived in London for 3 months after living and working in some of the British colonies, Hannay was bored with the social life in London and wished for more, and the more came to force Hannay into a dangerous adventure.

There is not much to talk about here, the story start and if you like it you’ll keep following Hannay, the game add some multimedia elements to the story and limit the text you need to read to few short sentences.

I like this sort of game or interactive fiction, so naturally i loved the game and i would recommend it, look for it in Steam and Apple Store.

Where the story start, a social club, a place like this makes want to live in the past!

Collecting vs investing

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, i know i prefer investing system over collecting system, let me explain.

In WoW players have collecting system, you can collect hundreds of pets, mounts, toys, achievements and transmog sets, there is so much to collect and that by itself is fine, collecting is fun i won’t deny that, i love to collect mounts for example which makes it very hard for me to resist buying Blizzcon virtual ticket, it’s 40 euro/dollars for the mount, it is one of the best mounts i ever seen and i’m going to buy it .. i know that!

Anyway, while collecting is fun, i find it shallow and sometimes tedious, having more than 100s mounts while using few of them makes it hard to care about collecting more, the only reason i want more mounts is to get an achievement or to get certain mounts like Invincible, the same thing for the pets and toys, reaching an achievement is going to happen but i’m not in a hurry.

Investing in the other hand is a word i picked for a system where collecting is not the goal, instead of having 100s of mounts you only can get few, say from 3 to 5 mounts per character, and non of them is account-wide.

The game itself should have a system where you can tame any kind of beasts, not only that, you have to level them, train them, add some bags to them, customize them with colors or different items, name them, the mount is not a cosmetic thing anymore, it is an investment.

Game designers could add more to the system, like connecting profession to the mounts, engineers don’t need any beasts .. thank you very much! they will build their own mounts, collecting scraps from the world and putting it together, tailors could add cosmetic items to the mounts like flags, and so on.

Mounts in this system is another way to add customization, and each player will have something different than they others, at least you won’t see 30 players in the same place with the same mount (i’ve seen this many times in WoW!).

This is a deeper system than collecting, which i prefer and i would love to see it in WoW but i know this is not going to happen, not after 12 years of collecting mounts and pets, but still .. does not harm to write about it.

Guilds War 2 mounts

Recently ArenaNet announced their second expansion for Guilds War 2, and for the first time in this game there are mounts, just 5 of them but each one is unique, each one have different ability to move around and to start a fight, and they provide different ways to move around the world which in itself is a puzzle, check this video to see the mount:

I really love Guilds War 2, one of the best features in the game is zone scaling, level 80 player will find low level zones challenging or at least not easy, so if you bought the game you can boost your first character to level 80 and the old content will still be relevant, something i wish WoW will do soon.

Oh, GW2 players can change the colors of their mounts using dyes.

August: Draenor Pathfinder

The Draenei and her oversized corgi

I have to admit, i rarely plan, and i rarely stick to any plan, and i regret that, i wish i could go back in time to tell myself “plan you fool!”.

Anyway, for July the plan was:

  • Download Lord of the Rings Online: i did it, leveled a lore-master to level 8, the game is so charming, i mean it feels old, it feels like mid-00s because it is, but i don’t think i have time for 3 MMOs, so i removed it, i’ll be back to it one day.
  • Finish the quest line for Kingsmouth Town in Secret World Legends: instead of finishing 1 zone did the first 3 and that the whole first story.
  • Keep writing for Nixxle, the goblin, in WoW: i did that, i want to write more in August.
  • Read at least 2 books: read one book, i need to read more in early morning before starting web browsing, resisting internet distractions is hard.

So far i’m happy with what i done, from no planning at all to simple plan and achieving most of it, this is good, so i hope to do more, so here is next month plan:

  • Reading: I recently bought Harry Potter box set, i want to read them all, it’s been 10 years since i read them last time.
  • Secret World Legends: start and finish second story, 2 zones in Egypt, maybe move to third story.
  • Finish few single player games by Amanita, i already finished most of them, i want to write about them.

In WoW:

  • Keep grinding to get Draenor Pathfinder, to get flying in Draenor, it will make few things easier for more grinding.
  • Get Cataclysm Loremaster, i’m done with Mount Hyjal and Uldum, already.
  • Grind reputation for Cataclysm as much as possible, i want to buy a camel.
  • Write more for Nixxle, more than 8 posts at least.
  • try NOT to start 3rd hunter! i have already 2 hunters, my main is human hunter, Nixxle the goblin, and i have human shadow priest i want to prepare for next expansion.

Since i boosted my main hunter, i didn’t do much of quests in old world, i want to do them at the same level, doing them with level 110 hunter is not fun, so i want to start another low level hunter on the alliance side to expernice these quests, i tried other classes but i could not stick with any of them, i enjoy playing hunters … but i should not start another one, not now 🙂

DINO! i’m happy!
Thank you RNG!

Farming Zul-Gurub pays at last, to be honest it didn’t take more than 2 weeks to get this mount, now i need the panther mount from the same dungeon.

Location of the house

Blizzard: where is my house?

Massively OP wrote a daily grind about housing, which MMO provide the most disappointing housing system, a good question and a subject i care about, because all games i play have no housing and i wish some of them have.

Some comments said Garrisons in Warlords of Draenor is one of them, and i disagree, Garrison should never be called housing, it never was and it never will, garrison should only called Garrison, a system Blizzard designed for WoD expansion.

Garrison is not housing because:

  • It is not optional in the time of Warlords of Draenor, you can skip it now with character boost, but if you are leveling a character you probably should have a garrison because a lot of the quests need it.
  • There is no customizing options, Alliance gets a human designed garrison, the Horde gets goblin/orcish designed garrison, and i don’t think building choice is customization.
  • In Legion, Garrison is irrelevant, you don’t need it, and if you are leveling you can’t get a garrison because you need to reach level 90 before starting with WoD.
  • Garrison is a military base, you don’t go there to arrange the furniture, you are a commander there who lead an army to invade a new world, this is not a house.

Housing in other MMOs does not work like garrison, so i don’t like it when WoW players or developers say we don’t want housing because garrison did not work … again: garrison is not housing.

WoW History with housing

The idea of housing in WoW is as old as WoW itself, Wowpedia documented this in a page, check Blizzard quotes section, the oldest quote goes back to july 2004, months before WoW release, Blizzard wanted to offer housing but i think they could not, time was probably not enough before release to offer housing, and i guess it was not their top priority every time they develop a new expansion.

Wow players asked for housing since 2004 to this day, check this video, viewer voted for features the want to see, and in this list of top 10, housing comes first:

Clearly there is a demand for housing in WoW, and it is one of these features that people won’t ever stop asking for.

How it could work in WoW

Blizzard won’t go crazy like WildStar or offer the freedom of Landmark, and that is fine, housing in wow will be an instance in many zones, they could let players choose which zone to put their build their house on, and WoW have so many zones, if you love desert like me you could choose Uldum and the zone will offer many spots to build your house, but you should be exalted with Ramkahen faction.

Your house is there for you only, no one will see it, it is an instance just like the garrison, you could invite people into a group to show off your house, they could show off their houses.

each profession could offer housing items, and Blizzard could add a new profession just for housing items, woodworking is an old idea, so this profession will work for housing and it could offer new toys and mounts.

The house should be cosmetic, unlike the garrison which offered too much for the player, the house should encourage the player to go out in the world to collect stuff for it, go to dungeons and raids, explore the world and find items to collect.

All of that is just an idea i wish to see, of course the last word is for Blizzard … come on Blizzard, what takes you so long?

Submachine world

Jay Is Games or JiG, an old website for video games, i used to visit it everyday for many years, it used to show mostly flash games, remember them? some of these games moved to other platforms like iOS and Android and even desktop operating systems, i’ll write about some of them in future posts, but first, i want to talk about the best series of flash games in my opinion, and thanks to JiG for showing this game first time in 2005.

The series is created and programmed by the polish artist Mateusz Skutnik, and from the first game i was a fan of his work, there is something about them makes them different from all the flash games i played in JiG, the music, the story, the atmosphere, it all work together to make these games unique.

What are these games? well … they are point and click games, a genre of computers games i love for many reasons, they are good for lazy people like me, they are perfect to relax and many of them tell good or funny stories, they don’t need high-end computer to play them, so they are perfect for me in mid 00s, i have slow connection and old computer assembled from old parts.

Submachine games are 10 games tell a story about a mysterious world, you the player play a role, explore the machine, try to solve the puzzles and understand what’s going on, there is nothing more to it, just point and click, explore and reach the end.

Also in the series there are 3 standalone games, that makes them 13, buy them from the artist, the cost only $25, also check the other games, some of them free browser games, you need flash to run them.

There is also one game in the series you can download for free, Submachine: universe, works in Mac, Linux and windows, this game is a collaboration between the developer and the players, you’ll see articles in the game written by the plyaers trying to explain what is the Submachine, theories about its creation and how it works and who is Mur.

I’m a tourist in virtual worlds, and Submachine world was and still is a world worth exploring, i love everything about it, thank you Mateusz for making the Submachine series.
